It is common for patients to have fears and anxieties over a visit to the dentist. In fact,
most Americans deal with some form of nervousness when they attend a dental appointment.
Dr. Kanorwalla understands that patients in Springfield may feel uneasy about the dentist’s office,
with its unusual sounds, smells, and environment. However, using sedation dentistry, Dr. Kanorwalla
is able to make her patients feel relaxed and at ease.
Sedation dentistry is a method of relaxing patients using medication or inhalation gas to provide a relaxed and calm feeling. There are two types of sedation used at Vanguard Dental, nitrous oxide and oral conscious sedation.
Nitrous oxide, which is often referred to as “laughing gas,” is administered through a mask over the nose, which allows patients to feel at ease immediately. It is often a similar effect as several glasses of wine for an adult patient or a dose of Benadryl for children. Some patients become giddy, while others are so relaxed that they may fall asleep. By administering oxygen after treatment, patients are immediately brought back to feeling like themselves again, allowing them to drive home or to work after their appointment.
Oral conscious sedation is an oral medication that is taken before the appointment. Patients must arrange transportation to and from Vanguard Dental, as it is not safe for patients under the influence of this medication to operate machinery. Patients are coherent and conscious, and can follow instructions, answer questions, and even use the bathroom without assistance. After their appointment, they return home to rest and they awaken with little to no memory of the dental appointment. This makes it easy for patients to have treatments done without anxiety, and enjoy visits to the dentist instead of dreading them.
